Relevance of dynamic variables in multicategory choice models

چکیده
Abstract We investigate the relevance of dynamic variables that reflect purchase history a household as independent in multicategory choice models. To this end, we estimate both homogeneous and finite mixture variants multivariate logit model. consider two types variables. Variables first type, which previous publications on models have ignored, are exponentially smoothed category purchases, simply call loyalties. second type log-transformed times since last any category. Our results clearly show adding improves statistical model performance with loyalties being more important than times. The majority coefficients marketing (features, displays, price reductions), pairwise interactions, cross-category relations differ between either including or excluding also measure effect probabilities same (own effects) other categories (cross effects). This exercise demonstrates without tends to overestimate own effects many product categories. positive omitted variable bias provides another explanation for well-known problem “overpromotion” retailing.

Testing Dependence Among Serially Correlated Multicategory Variables
The contingency table literature on tests for dependence among discrete multi-category variables is extensive. Standard tests assume, however, that draws are independent and only limited results exist on the e¤ect of serial dependency a problem that is important in areas such as economics, nance, medical trials and meteorology. This paper proposes new tests of independence based on canonical c...
متن کاملClosed-Form Identification of Dynamic Discrete Choice Models with Proxies for Unobserved State Variables
For dynamic discrete choice models of forward-looking agents where a continuous state variable is unobserved but its proxy is available, we derive closed-form identification of the structure by explicitly solving integral equations. For an empirical illustration, we analyze industry dynamics in Chile.
متن کاملClosed-Form Estimation of Dynamic Discrete Choice Models with Unobserved State Variables
For dynamic discrete choice models where a state variable is unobserved but its proxy is available, we derive closed-form identification of the conditional choice probability (CCP), the Markov law of state transition, and the underlying structural parameters by explicitly solving relevant integral equations. Because of its closed form like the OLS, our estimator does not rely on numerical optim...
متن کاملInference in Dynamic Models Containing 'surprise' Variables*
Some new results on calculating moving average representation (MAR) coefficients and their limiting distribution from estimated vector ARMA processes are presented. The technique is applied to the problem of estimating the coefficients of unanticipated or 'surprise' variables in a single equation for a multi-period expectations horizon. The method naturally conditions the expectations on all pa...
متن کاملHeterogeneity in dynamic discrete choice models
We consider dynamic discrete choice models with heterogeneity in both the levels parameter and the state dependence parameter. We rst analyse the purchase of full fat milk using a long consumer panel (T > 100) on many households. The large T nature of the panel allows us to consistently estimate the parameters of each household separately. This analysis indicates strongly that the levels and T...
